IMPORTANT FYI: MAC COMPUTERS & 1.8" ANALOG PLUG MICROPHONES

It's critical to know a Mac compatible USB headset with microphone is the BEST choice for Mac VOIP users. Analog-Only headsets are NOT. The 1.8" audio input jack on recent Mac computers is LINE-LEVEL Analog, NOT MICROPHONE-LEVEL. So the vast majority of Analog PC microphones simply will _NOT_ work, they don't send a strong enough signal for your Mac to 'hear'. Quite a few wired headsets however come bundled with a USB to 1/8" Analog dongle to convert a headset to USB digital - and those work fine. Ideally, a pure USB headset with a direct USB plug on the end is a Macintosh users best option. For example, the Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB Headset is an excellent option.

SoftPhones: SIP Software For Mac

See the Mac VOIP News page for Apple OSX SIP - Session Initiation Protocol based software phones to use with any number of VOIP providers. Manage all your calls directly onscreen with a 'virtual' SIP phone application. But even traditional SIP soft-phone applications are getting virtualized -- right into web-pages! Here's an example of a solution from Gizmo/OpenSky:

Try a Sample Free VOIP Call: Enter 'skype_echo123' into the phone # area and click on the Green 'Off-Hook' phone icon. This will call the Skype Test Call number where you can experience a call. Leave a voice message and press # when finished to hear your test recording play back. Pretty neat!

Ethernet & Wireless WiFi VOIP Skype Phones

There are a handful of cross-platform PC and Mac WiFi Skype phones that don't need your Mac or Windows computer at all. In short, they run a special version of Skype built-in to the phone's operating system. Typically around $130 in price for WiFi models, you may need to make ALOT of calls to justify the payback on the money you'd save in long-distance. Still they give a tremendous amount of freedom to call anywhere in range of an open or password protected Wi-Fi network. Do note that these phones from Ipevo, Belkin, Netgear - lack a built-in web browser: For connecting to some networks such as at Starbucks or at an airport - this can be a show-stopper with no way to log-in for pay internet access.

One of the challenges of WiFi Skype phones for Mac owners is because these are hardware based, bugs in the IP phone OS may need to be done via a software or firmware update - often needing to be run on a Windows PC. You may find ower-cost Ethernet connected VOIP phones are more straightforward, cheaper, and like any WIRED device - a bit more reliable and need less futzing.

Ipevo S0-20 WiFi Skype Phone Kit Here's a complete wireless 802.11 phone for at home - or on the road with included AC and Car charger kits. Call anywhere there's open wireless access - or key in the password for protected networks. You can also save and search for your favorite known networks for quick connection. Do note, many WiFi phones DO NOT have a built-in web-browser. So Pay-For networks like you might encounter at an airport with signup screens cannot be used.

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch VOIP Solutions

VO-IP isn't just limited to Apple Macintosh computers - Some interesting VOIP software solutions are showing up at the iTunes App Store helping some iPhone 3 OS owners place calls over Wi-Fi. VOIP telephone solutions on the iPod Touch (especially 1st gen) are tricky because 1. The iPod touch models lack a built in mic or adequate speaker - and 2. Changes in iPod dock microphone-speaker behavior in 2nd generation models complicate things. Search the iTunes App Store for VOIP apps that might cut your calling expenses.
